Federal Member for Ryan, Michael Johnson MP today welcomed the announcement that a Coalition Government will improve the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through direct, practical and local measures, including a bold and exciting “one million solar roofs policy”.

“I am thrilled Tony Abbott’s leadership has produced a clear and meaningful policy to address climate change. Tony Abbott’s policy is all about putting the environment first, family budgets first and job security first and crippling energy taxes absolutely last,” Mr Johnson said.

“The Coalition’s direct action plan is careful, costed and capped – reducing emissions and improving the environment without a big new tax on everything. The Coalition’s climate change policy does not include any new or increased taxes as promised by Tony Abbott MP when he assumed the Liberal leadership,” Mr Johnson said.

“It takes advantage of Australia’s natural comparable advantages: soil and sun – both of which we have in abundance.”

“The coalition will assist families and businesses by providing incentives to help them reduce their carbon emissions through practical, effective and direct action that will also improve the local environment,” Mr Johnson said.

“This is in stark contrast to the Rudd Government’s big fat tax on everything that will increase the costs of living for families, penalise businesses and export jobs.”

A New Solar Sunrise for Australia!

“Families and businesses will be encouraged to take up renewable energy with the goal of achieving one million additional solar energy roofs on homes by 2020.”

“The Coalition will provide a $1,000 rebate for either solar panels or solar hot water systems, capped at 100,000 rebates per year, with the goal of achieving one million additional solar energy roofs on homes by 2020. This would be in addition to existing rebates and would reduce CO2 emissions by up to 3 million tonnes a year.”

“This is especially exciting for the local Ryan community following my very popular 2007 Solar Suburbs Vision and my 2009 Solar September initiative.”

Practical Climate Change Offsets Funding

“$50 million will also be allocated to a Geothermal and Tidal Towns Initiative and $2 million devoted to a major study into the use of underground electricity transmission and the potential land recovery from the conversion of overhead power line corridors to urban parklands and inner suburban housing.”

“We will also support the planting of an additional 20 million trees by 2020 to re-establish urban forests and green corridors.”

“These are some practical measures that will improve our environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions - all without a great big new tax that will increase the price of everything.”

“Global environmental security remains a worldwide challenge but I believe Australia can do its bit with incentives, innovation and entrepreneurship - not big bureaucracy, not big government and certainly not with big fat energy taxes,” Mr Johnson said.
