These are very special Australians in every sense of the word.” Said Mr Johnson. “The close personal bond between Sapper Smith and his Explosive Detection Dog Herbie, who was also killed in the IED blast, needs to be acknowledged and remembered.” “The ultimate sacrifice made by these two young Soldiers at this time and the sacrifices of all our soldiers, sailors and airmen to ensure that the freedoms of our great nation are protected need to be in our thoughts today and every day.” Said Mr Johnson. “I know that the people of Ryan will join with me in expressing their heavy hearts in this time of deep grief.” On their behalf of the people of Ryan I have this week written to Brigadier Paul McLachlan, the Commander of 7 Brigade to express my condolences.
